When a Child Sees Themselves in a Story

Something happens when a child reads a story written by another child their age and recognises themselves in it. It is not the same thing that happens when they recognise themselves in a story written by an adult. The adult-authored recognition is validating: someone understands what childhood is like. The peer-authored recognition is something more immediate. It says: someone like me did this. Which means I could do this too.
This is the specific power of Gabriel's books for the children who encounter them in StoryQuest workshops. Gabriel is not a prodigy. He is not exceptional in the ways that usually get children published. He is a British-Pakistani boy from Cheltenham who loves platypuses and sea monsters and worked out his ideas by narrating them to his mother over FaceTime. The ordinary circumstances of his creativity are entirely visible, because Kate has never hidden them. And that visibility is the point.
When a child who has been told, explicitly or implicitly, that they are not a writer sees a book written by a child their age, their first response is curiosity. When they discover that the book was created by speaking rather than writing, by narrating to someone who scribed without correcting, the barrier shifts. The gap between "someone who creates books" and "me" suddenly closes in a way it cannot when the author is an adult with twenty years of professional writing behind them.
Teachers report this consistently. Children who would not engage with traditional literacy sessions asking to hear Gabriel's story. Children who said they hated writing asking to tell their own. The identification is not with the story's plot or its characters. It is with the fact of authorship itself. If Gabriel, who is a child, who made this up, who had it written down exactly as he said it, is an author, then what does that make me when I do the same thing?
The answer, across 465 children in nine schools, has been the same every time. It makes them authors too. Present tense. Published proof. The identification does not just inspire them. It transforms how they understand what they are capable of, and that transformation is the one that lasts longest after the workshop ends.
